Report Release: Changing the Game
July 21st, 2025
Today at Aspen Ideas Climate in Chicago we released our new report: Changing the Game: Community-Based Strategies and Climate Mitigation. Equation Campaign, MacArthur Foundation, and Marin Community Foundation commissioned the Redstone Group to conduct the research that highlights the powerful role of frontline and community-led groups in reducing emissions, protecting land and water, and advancing enduring climate solutions.
Too often, national or top-down strategies undervalue the impact of place-based work, but this report provides the data and evidence for what Equation Campaign has known all along: that some of the most effective climate mitigation work is happening in, and led by, the communities most harmed by the climate crisis and the fossil fuel expansion that's driving it.
“Our report shows that investing in the organizations and leaders closest to the harms will not only get us the climate solutions we urgently need; supporting communities protecting their homelands and demanding clean air and water increases civic engagement, strengthening our fragile democracy right when we need it most.” - Katie Redford, Executive Director of Equation Campaign
We hope that this report will encourage more people in philanthropy to join us in funding what, until now, has been an underfunded piece of the climate solutions equation.
